My 40th year was one of the best years of my life. I felt REALLY good. I was like if this is what my 40’s are going to be like, I am ALL IN!
41 hit, and all hell broke loose. Anyone else feel this way?? My best friends and I are on a daily text string together and this is one thing we were all discussing last week. A few of us definitely feel the affects of 40 plus. My friend and I were chatting this weekend about it too; why doesn’t anyone warn us about all the shit that happens with your body when you hit 40?
I am not sure why, but this year has been so hard on me mentally and physically. Jon was teasing me last week that I was turning into Betty White (who just turned 97 by the way!). But I have struggled with things I had never felt before. Chronic pain in my back, a leg injury that is taking forever to heal, the inability to workout as hard as I used to, waking up in pain, and having trouble sleeping.
Overall, my body just does not recover like it used to. I pulled a muscle in my leg, in November. I had dry needling done at the FIT clinic in KC over Christmas vacation. It helped a lot, and I really thought it was getting better. But I am still not 100%, which is frustrating. I am not sure what in the heck I did to my back, but I wake up in pain every morning. It is between and underneath my shoulder blades. I started taking CBD pills this week which has been a lifesaver for the pain. I am making an appointment for acupuncture this week to see if that helps. Other things that helping me are this cream by Rixx which really works amazing, and it doesn’t have a funky smell to it. I have been taking Epsom salt baths; soaking for at least 20 minutes. The CBD pills are by Hemp Fusion and they work!
I also feel like my metabolism came to a screeching halt. I used to be able to workout 3-4 days a week, eat healthy majority of the time, and then splurge on the weekends. Those cheat days are no longer an option. Not only do I feel like crap when I eat that way, but I also feel like my body has to work twice as hard is it used to to burn it off. But, let’s be honest, nobody is perfect. I had shake shack this weekend! ugh! We all need to splurge every once in a while, and it is ok!!! It’s also much harder to maintain a flat stomach. I have to eat SUPER clean, and really only have clean cocktails (vodka soda’s) to keep the love handles at bay 🙁
My gray hairs tripled this past year. Maybe it is stress, maybe it is just genetic (my grandmother was completely white at an early age) I think blonde hair hides the gray a little better, but it’s still annoying to see. Also, gray eyebrows anyone?! WTF! I have had to pluck a few of those! I have heard good things about this Oribe root touch up spray, to get between color appointments. It comes in multiple colors for all shades.
I look at this picture and all I see are the bad wrinkles around my eyes. It is a harsh reality that wrinkles are also coming in faster than they used to. After age 30, collagen production in the body stops by 1-2% each year! I wish someone would have told me 10 years ago to start taking collagen powder, and to use a stronger SPF everyday. All of you under 30, you have so many resources out there now! Be proactive!
Thankfully there are so many great treatments we can do to keep our skin in good shape. I am going to write a little bit more on this in an upcoming post. But, I did start doing botox at 39, I have been getting BBL lasers every year for the past 5 years, and last year I tried voluma filler in my cheekbones, which does give a good lift around the cheeks and eyes. I add Vital Proteins collagen powder to my coffee every morning too, which helps obviously with skin, hair and nails, but also gut health.
It is hard to embrace aging, but when it comes down to it, we just need to be grateful for our health. There are women under 40 dealing with chronic disease, unable to care for their families. So, just being able to get out of bed each day is a blessing!
