From the time I could afford it, I started investing in my skin. I remember buying Kiehl’s at the end of college, because I worked at Nordstrom and got a discount. Since then, I have always worked hard to find the best skincare routine. As I have gotten older (and maybe a little wiser) I have gotten smarter about the products that I use.
I have tried to go mostly natural with my products. It is hard to tell how these products will help my skin over time, but I do feel that my skin tone has improved (less red, splotchy and dry) and I just feel better putting safe products on my skin.
I am by no means an expert! But here are the things that are currently working for me:
I use both of these cleansers; the Zum in the morning and the Andalou Naturals at night because I feel like it takes off makeup a little better. I have very sensitive skin, and the Andalou 1000 roses products have been great! These are also good for teens who are maybe wanting to start a skincare routine. You can get it at Whole Foods and it is not terribly expensive.
I use different moisturizers depending on the day. If I am just heading to the gym, and know that I will be sweating I will use the Pacifica Kale Luxe cream which is super lightweight (and affordable! at Target). If I want medium moisture I will use the Fresh Vitamin Nectar (this can be used day or evening). For nighttime, I love the Derma-E Hydrating cream (also at Whole Foods) which contains hyaluronic Acid which is THE safe anti aging ingredient that you want to look for in your serums or moisturizers . Hyaluronic acid is a lubricating, clear substance that’s produced by the body naturally. In the human body, hyaluronic acid is found in the greatest concentrations in the skin, inside joints, within the eye sockets and in other tissues where it helps retain collagen, increase moisture, and provide elasticity and flexibility.
Did you know you quit producing collagen after 35?! So, I have been taking collagen powder daily and I recently got this pro-collagen moisturizer by Elemis. Clinically proven; the powerful anti-aging ingredients of Pro-Collagen Marine Cream have been shown to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and improve skin firmness, tone and hydration in 14 days! Also, they are donating a portion of the proceeds of this to Breast Cancer this month. For a limited time you can get the supersize tub for $160 *$256 value.
One of my secret weapons, as seen above is a rose quartz gua sha tool is used by firmly rubbing this along your face, temples and neck. Research shows that gua sha causes a dramatic increase in circulation in the soft tissues under the skin. You can read more about how to use it HERE. I typically do it at night before bedtime, because I have more time than in the morning. Here are the major benefits of using this tool:
- It reduces acne, rosacea and blemishes on the skin,
- With repeated treatments it can significantly reduce wrinkles
- Gua sha Firms up sagging of the face and neck
- It combats the formation of bags and dark circles under the eyes,
- Promotes a more radiant complexion
- Diminishes age spots and skin discoloration
- Gua sha facilitates the drainage of lymphatic fluid from face and neck.
I got mine at Hand & Land in Park Place and they are under $20!
My other favorite tool is the Genius Ultra from Arbonne. I know what you ladies are thinking; and no it is not what you think it is! This tool sends tiny wave frequencies to get your products into deeper layers of the skin, it will also help firm up the skin around your eyes, reduce puffiness and fine lines and wrinkles. I use it with their RE-9 under eye cream.
I think one step a lot of people miss is exfoliation. It is so important to get rid of those dead skin cells. It makes your skin look so much healthier, and will also help smooth your skin which makes for better makeup application. I really have been loving this Fresh Vitamin Nectar Mask from Fresh. Give your skin an instant glow powered by a concentrated blend of 50 percent crushed citrus fruits that reveals radiant skin in as little as one use. It really does work.
Lastly, I do love face oils and a toner. I find myself using the oils in the winter and the toner more in the summer. These are both by La Bruket, which is an all natural line from Sweden. It is fabulous and not terribly expensive! I got it at George in Crestwood, but you can find online HERE.
I think the key is to trying things; and with all natural you won’t ever have some crazy reaction. Whole Foods has very well priced natural beauty, and so does Skin KC which just opened in Brookside. Now you can even find natural beauty products at Target, which is great!!
